Job Description

The Director of Academic Operations (DAO) for the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics serves as the lead administrator overseeing academic operations within the Department as well as the lead administrator in the Office of the Chair. The DAO works collaboratively with division directors, division managers, and PSOM executives to foster honest and transparent lines of communication between and among administration and faculty. The DAO is a key member of the DBEI Leadership Team and independently makes decisions and leads initiatives that concern and impact faculty. In particular, the Director of Academic Operations works in a close and coordinated fashion with the Director of Fiscal and Administrative Operations to jointly ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity of all aspects of operational implementation of the Department's missions. As part of his/her responsibility for overseeing academic operations directly related to the Department's research and education activities, the Director of Academic Operations has responsibility for: administrative direction related to strategic planning; operations associated with faculty recruitment, retention, and faculty professional development; space management; communications with internal and external stakeholders; oversight of divisional operations; and serving as a liaison between the Chair and School/ University academic offices. The DAO provides oversight of the appointments and promotions processes, faculty recruitment process, and annual faculty assessments, and serves as a key advisor to the Chair and Director of Fiscal and Administrative Operations regarding salary equity and the annual salary increase process for faculty. The DAO works closely with DBEI Division Directors and Vice Chairs on a variety of issues and initiatives; provides guidance and administrative expertise to various leadership and faculty committees; oversees compilation of faculty data, and reviews analyses to identify trends; and engages in highly complex decision making to address a variety of issues impacting faculty. The DAO will work with the Chair and the Director of Fiscal and Administrative Operations to oversee the development, review, evaluation and implementation of departmental faculty policies, budget development, and resource management.


The incumbent must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) with > 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required in a University or academic setting; expertise at building strong internal and external relationships with a track record of working with academic partners, faculty, leadership, and diverse management teams; strong financial and technical acumen; a track record of promoting an environment of accountability and continuous performance improvement; possess the ability to prioritize competing important demands with keen attention to detail and flexibility in work schedule; demonstrate the ability to initiate and foster relationships with internal and external constituents that enable robust partnerships and resource sharing; promote and support an environment that values and fosters a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture; and possess exceptional judgement, professionalism, poise, and confidentiality in representing the department to internal and external constituencies.
