Position Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) educates aspiring physicians to be justice-minded, global citizens using a community-based, distributed model of education, which fosters inclusion, discovery, and innovation. The UIWSOM invites applications for a full-time public health faculty member.

UIWSOM is seeking a full-time faculty member for the Clinical and Applied Science Education Department. This faculty member is responsible for teaching, as well as providing community service to the university and SOM. This faculty position reports to the Chair of the Clinical and Applied Sciences Education Department. It is strongly preferred that research activity be consistent with the UIWSOM research/scholarly activity strategic plan, including medical education research. Faculty members assume the shared responsibility of developing, recommending, and executing all approved policies of instruction. The faculty shall consist of individuals who have been appointed to the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. The faculty member will operate within the UIWSOM framework of lifelong learning through collaborative scholarship, innovative educational excellence and learner-centered curricula.
This position is considered a "Responsible Employee" under Title IX federal regulations and "Mandatory Reporter" under Texas state law and the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about Title IX violations. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Essential Functions
  • Participate in the collaborative development, implementation, and assessment of curricula within the Master of Public Health, Master of Biomedical Sciences, and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine programs, as assigned by the Chair.
  • Assist faculty and students, in collaboration with the Dean of Research and Innovation, with research design/methodology and data analysis.
  • Per the SOM mission, accreditation standards, and the Chairs discretion, participate in the implementation of a transformative DO curriculum that involves the collaborative development and execution of competency-based, innovative and integrated teaching and learning strategies within a clinical context.
  • Engage with and educate the community with respect to osteopathic medical educational practices and scholarship.
  • Support clinically relevant community-based translational research, social justice-based research, and medical education research and scholarship consistent with the UIWSOM Research and Scholarly Activity Strategic Plan.
  • Integrate national and international trends in medical education and their discipline into innovative educational practice.
  • Serve on committees and subcommittees as appointed by the Dean.
  • Actively participate in teaching and academic skill development and professional development activities.
  • Undergo training to qualify as a facilitator in the case-based and problem-based learning program and UIWSOM curriculum delivery methods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education
DrPH or PhD in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or terminal degree in related field, or an MPH along with a DO or MD degree, or other terminal degree.

Required Work Experience
  • Strong teaching skills and experience as a graduate-level educator in a health-related field.
  • Strong knowledge base and experience in public health, particularly in one or more of the following:
    • Health behavior and health promotion,
    • Social and behavioral determinants of health, and/or
    • Development and evaluation of interventions to improve population health and address inequities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in public health and/or health care system settings as a physician and/or health professional.
  • Experience as teaching faculty and progressive leadership at an undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education institution in North America.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in a new medical school startup or other endeavor requiring adaptability.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
