The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants for a faculty position at the assistant, associate, or full professor level in the area of biosecurity and infectious diseases or veterinary epidemiology. The position will be in the Associated Faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track, (Academic Track Table) which focuses on clinical service and teaching. A typical division of effort for faculty in the AC track at New Bolton Center is 90% time on clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 10% for academic efforts. Didactic and laboratory teaching and administrative or other service duties are included in both on and off-clinic time. PLEASE NOTE: we are filling a single position with this search but are also accepting applications in our Clinician-Educator track, which carries with it assigned time and expectations for research.

The successful candidate will serve as the Director of Biosecurity at the New Bolton Center campus. Responsibilities include managing existing biosecurity and infectious disease control programs for the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals and the New Bolton Center campus, including ongoing program evaluation and optimization. The successful candidate will develop protocols aimed at the prevention of nosocomial spread of disease and reduction of zoonotic disease risk for hospital personnel. The ability to develop and implement new programs and/or modify existing ones in the face of a changing threat environment is expected. Community outreach would be encouraged, including on-farm assessment of infectious disease protocols, advising during producer-related outbreaks, quarantine recommendations for rescue organizations, etc. Teaching and outreach efforts include development of a teaching curriculum in biosecurity for students, residents, and CE audiences, communication with stakeholders, and development of educational materials for animal owners. Additional teaching in other areas of the candidate's expertise will be encouraged.

The New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals enjoys one of the highest caseloads among peer institutions, admitting over 7000 patients in 2022. The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center employs over 40 diplomates of multiple American and European specialty colleges who are in direct support of the program, including 10 double-boarded individuals. The 24 Clinician-Educators and 9 Tenure-track faculty perform the majority of the Department's research, along with graduate students enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania's Biomedical Graduate Studies program through funding by New Bolton Center's Penn Veterinary Scientist Training program, in addition to post-doctoral trainees, fellows and visiting scholars.

New Bolton Center is located on 700 rolling acres in beautiful Chester County, Pennsylvania. The campus is only 35 miles from Philadelphia, combining the advantages of a rural setting with those of a nearby major metropolitan center. The successful candidate has the potential to access the clinical, teaching and research units on the campus, including the Veterinary School's 200-cow Marshak Dairy and the 250-sow Swine Teaching & Research Center, as well as the facilities and expertise of the internationally renowned New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals. Opportunities exist throughout the campus, School and University for interaction and collaboration with other departments and initiatives at Penn Vet including the Center for Stewardship Agriculture and Food Security, Pathobiology, Wildlife Futures, and core laboratories working on microbial genomics, stem cell biology, orthopedic disease, and germ cell biology on the New Bolton Center Campus, and the three other departments of Penn Vet at the main campus of the University of Philadelphia, in Philadelphia's lively University District. Potential for collaboration exists throughout Penn, including with the Perelman School of Medicine, Penn Dental Medicine, and Penn School of Nursing.


Qualifications
Required qualifications are a VMD or equivalent degree, evidence of work with and expertise in infectious diseases, and excellent interpersonal, teaching, and communication skills. Board certification in a related veterinary specialty is beneficial. The successful AC candidate will have a track record of excellence in the management of infectious disease and the development of biosecurity protocols; a research program is not required for AC applicants. Experience with regulatory and public health bodies at federal, national, state, and local levels is highly desirable. A history of successful interactions with stakeholders (veterinarians, producers, government) and experience with outbreak management and epidemiological traceback/trace forward is highly desirable. The candidate should also have a record of excellence in didactic and clinical teaching in the subjects of biosecurity, infection control, and/or epidemiology.
